Glossary of IT Terms

There are a lot of technical terms used in the IT and web development industries which the layman may not be entirely familiar with.

While we always strive to use plain English when talking to clients, there are inevitably occasions whereby we have to use computer terminology. So, to help you make sense of some of the jargon used in the computer world, we have compiled this handy glossary of techie terms and web speak. We hope it helps to make things a bit clearer!

Glossary of Computing Terminology

NAS

Network Attached Storage. A hard disk data storage device which is attached directly to a network, rather than the network server.

Navigate

To look around the different pages of a website using hyperlinks.

Network

A system of computers which are interconnected by a server.

Network Switch

A device which connects the different sections of a network.

Notebook

Another name for a laptop computer.

Novell

A software manufacturer specialising in network operating systems.

Online

Can refer to being connected to the Internet, or to an application which is accessed and operated through the Internet, for example Google Analytics.

Open Source

A program which is free of charge to download and use and has source code which is available for anyone to view, modify, or even use in the development of other programs.

Operating System

A program which controls the management all other programs on a computer, for example Microsoft Windows.

PageRank (PR)

A score out of ten given to every web page by Google, based on the quality of incoming links to the page.

Patch Panel

A group of sockets used to connect all the computers and hardware in a network to the network itself.

Pay-Per-Click (PPC)

An online service which displays advertisements (known as 'ads'), usually on search engine results pages, based on keywords chosen by the subscriber. The subscriber is only charged when users 'click through' the ad to be taken to the landing page of the website being advertised. The charge is variable but never goes above the amount set by the subscriber.

PC

A personal computer. Also known as a desktop computer.

PDA

Personal Digital Assistant. A small handheld computer which functions as a personal organiser.

PDF

Portable Document Format. A file format created by Adobe Systems. A document saved in this format can be viewed with Adobe Acrobat Reader. It will look exactly the same on any computer and cannot be altered.

Phishing

A fraudulent method of obtaining someone's personal data such as passwords or account details over the Internet, often through spam emails.

PHP

Personal Home Page or Pre-Hypertext Processor. A computer programming language particularly suited to creating dynamic web pages.

Plugin

Software that can be downloaded from the Internet to add more functionality to a web browser, for example the Flash plugin which allows users to view Flash animations on the web.

Podcast

An audio or video media file which can be instantly downloaded from the web.

POP3

Post Office Protocol 3. A standard procedure for receiving emails from a mail server. It stores messages until users log on and download them.

Private Circuit

See leased line.

Program

A coded list which instructs a computer to perform a task or series of tasks. A piece of software is a program.
